DOLORES PÉREZ  RECORDINGS: An assesment

The possessor of a fabulous, unique voice, which could move effortlessly from lirico to spinto to mezzo, DOLORES PÉREZ  is still very much with us through her many recordings.  In 1952 she signed a recording contract with Montilla/Zafiro which produced some of her best work on record.

What becomes immediately obvious from listening to her after one has absorbed the beauty of  her exquisite sound is her impeccable diction and her dramatic commitment.  Rarely on records does one feel such drama inherent
solely in the voice, the phrasing and the colors employed.  Listening to Dolores Pérez  gives one the impression that she is going to jump right out of the recording and start singing live right in front of you. Such is her emotional involvement in all of her recorded work.  Notable examples are her recordings of Doña Francisquita, Gigantes y Cabezudos, El Huésped del Sevillano, La Canción del Olvido, and her sublime and sexy Frou-Frou in La Duquesa del Bal Tabarin. Her work in the three classic recordings of the Cuban zarzuelas by Ernesto Lecuona, Maria La O, Rosa La China, and El Cafetal is today still unchallenged.

Half a century after these three records were made, they still set the standard for these works, and though other recordings have appeared in those intervening fifty years, they are amateurish and pedestrian in comparison.  Quite an achievement if one considers that the bulk of her discography was made when Dolores Perez was still in her twenties.
Shamefully, both SONY-BMG and EMI, which now own most of her recorded output have done little with it.  A few of the Montilla/Zafiro  recordings (now the property of SONY-BMG) have appeared sporadically on CD in Spain in barely acceptable sound.  A larger selection of these has popped up in the United States on the Montilla label in deplorable presentations with atrocious sound.  Montilla, despite its fabulous catalog, holds the distinction of being one of the worst perpetrators of inferior CD's in the United States along with Orfeon, another infamous label.
The EMI recordings were made in the late sixties and early seventies and were conceived as soundtracks to an extensive series of filmed zarzuelas.  The voices of Dolores Perez, Luis Sagi-Vela, and Carlo del Monte among others were dubbed on-screen by actors portraying  the various roles.  These recordings are in stereo and have great sound, yet EMI has issued but a few on CD, and has done nothing to improve the sonics.  Their CD transfer of El Barberillo de Lavapiés , for instance, is totally distorted.  Let us hope that in the future these two companies decide to mend their ways and start doing right by zarzuela lovers, as between them they own the greatest documents of recorded zarzuela on this planet.
